A Confusion still persists on the pros and cons of millions of ladies that, What happens if I Sleep without a bra? Is sleeping with a bra good or bad? There are different answers from different people, some say sleeping with a bra causes breast Cancer while some others say sleeping without a bra causes sagginess.

There has been a lot of dispute on this topic. There are extreme no-bra while sleeping people, and there is a quite big supporter team also.

It depends on what bra do you use for sleeping. As it is always suggested to match your underwear with your outfit and activity that you do, we can say that sleeping is kind of an ‘activity’, so the right choice of bra can be worn. As you are suggested to wear different kind of bra if you go for running or you go to office, you can choose a different one for sleeping, and it won’t be ‘bad’ at all.

Definitely an underwire and padded bra is not the right choice. Underwire is used in bras to give more support, and hold your breast tissues against gravity, during sleeping as you are lying gravity doesn’t affect your breast tissues, and on the top of it underwire – as it is made of metal or plastic- can start poking at certain parts, which can be disturbing while sleeping.

Padding and lining in bras are added to either enhance your cleavage or to give an asymmetrical, and decent look to your bust. During sleeping, you don’t even need such qualities from your bra. As most of the padding and foam lining is made of some man-made fabric it can be irritating to your skin. During hot summer night, when we tend to sweat more if your skin is sensitive you might face rashes.

The best choice for a sleeping bra is a non-wired cotton or silk bra or bralette. You can even go for light support non-wired sports bras, which are used for yoga and light physical activities.

Benefits of staying without a bra:

  1. Blood circulation increases.
  2. Strengthens the tissues of breasts.
  3. You feel natural, the fabric touch to the breast is a feel-good factor physiologically.
  4. Your breasts no need to rely on bra support, they naturally adjust to handle the gravitational impact.
  5. The natural free moment of the breasts gives the required exercise hence it strengthens the tissues and helps blood circulation rate better.
  6. If you are very much used to the bra and if you feel uncomfortable, then try boob pasties. So that nipples won’t be poking out from the fabric.
  7. Finally, as there is an increase in blood circulation, there is a mild growth in the breast as well.

MYTH – There is no credible evidence that bras cause or even increase the risk of breast cancer.

From the National Center of Health Research:

  1. The idea that bras may cause cancer was fueled by the 1995 book called Dressed to Kill by Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer. It claims that women who wear underwire bras for 12 hours a day have a much higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who do not wear bras. They maintain that bras restrict the lymph system, which results in a build-up of toxins in the breasts.
  2. However, according to the American Cancer Society, there is no evidence that compression of the lymph nodes by bras causes breast cancer; in reality, body fluids travel up and into the underarm lymph nodes, not towards the underwire. Similarly, there is no sufficient evidence that any types of bras cause breast cancer.

From Breastcancer.org –  Breast Cancer Information and Support: source- Quora Report

  1. Underwire bras do not cause breast cancer. Only one scientific study has looked at the link between wearing a bra and breast cancer. There was no real difference in risk between women who wore a bra and women who didn’t wear a bra. Being overweight does increase breast cancer risk though, and women who are overweight are more likely to have larger breasts and wear a bra. Women who don’t wear bras are more likely to be at a healthy weight. This difference in weight is probably why this myth continues to circulate.

From the Maurer Foundation – Breast Health Education.

What About Men? Think about it: Men can get breast cancer too and yet they don’t wear bras. This surely wouldn’t make sense if bra-wearing was a leading cause of breast cancer.

History Tells a Different Tale: Breast cancer has been around far longer than bras. As far back as 1600 BC the first mentions of cancerous breast tumors in humans were described on the Edwin Smith Papyrus. Bras, on the other hand, only replaced the corset in the late 19th century and weren’t made in their current form (with under-wiring or tight support structure) until well into the 1930s.

From http://Cancer.Net – They have a detailed list of more than a dozen risk factors for breast cancer and ‘bra’ does not appear anywhere in the list.

From the Susan G. Koman site:

  1. Scientific evidence does not support a link between wearing an underwire bra (or any type of bra) and breast cancer risk.
  2. There’s no biological reason they would be linked. Any observed relationship is likely due to other factors.
